Horses and riders who have moved past the Introductory Level of dressage are ready for Training Level. The requirements at this level are simple.

The Training Level dressage tests are the easiest of all of the USEF tests, and the expectations at this level are really quite simple so the riders can focus on perfecting the basic principles of dressage. Most horses and riders with a reasonable amount of basic experience are able to perform these tests. However, being able to perform the movements does not mean they will win. Careful preparation and training before the dressage show, including fully understanding the requirements of Training Level, are the best way to be competitive.

Where to Find Training Level Dressage Tests

The instructions for the Training Level dressage tests can be found on the USEF website. The instructions on the website give the letter on the dressage court where the movement is to take place, then which movement to perform. On the official show versions of the instructions, it explains what the judge is looking for and provides a place for the judge to give a score on each movement.

Required Movements in the Training Level Dressage Tests

The USEF identifies the purpose of the Training Level dressage tests as "The purpose of the Training Level Dressage Tests is to confirm that the horse's muscles are supple and loose, and that it moves freely forward in a clear and steady rhythm, accepting contact with the bit."

The Training Level dressage tests can be performed by any horse and rider who are capable of walking, trotting, cantering, steering and stopping. They are required to make 20-metre circles at the trot and canter, walk calmly and in the third and fourth tests, perform a free walk and a stretchy circle at the trot. Free walk and stretchy circle mean that the horse is allowed to reach forward and down with his neck, lengthen his stride slightly and stretching his entire topline. They should also be able to change directions and bend at the trot--in the third test, a figure-eight is required, consisting of a 20-metre circle to the left followed by one to the right, and in the fourth test, a trot loop is requred from the corner letter, through X, and back out to the next corner.

What Dressage Judges Look for in Training Level Tests

At the Training Level of dressage, the judge wants to see a horse that is relaxed and willing to do his job. They look for balanced, smooth transitions and clear gaits. They also want to see circles that are round and the correct size, straight lines and immobile halts. The collective marks at the end of the test are given for the horse’s gaits, impulsion and submission, and the rider’s position and use of the aids.

The Training Level dressage tests are a good place to start for many beginning dressage horses and riders, as long as they are capable of performing the simple movements safely. For some advice on riding dressage tests, read Tips for Riding a Dressage Test.
